Tide Pod challenge-

Back in 2015 the new ‘Tide pod Challenge’ struck the internet after a satirical newspaper The Onion published a column about a child who wanted to eat the red and blue detergent pod, which has that candy-like appearance to it. According to Time Magazine, in 2016 the trend became more known. 39 cases of intentional misuse of the pods were reported among teens in 2016. In 2017 there were 53 different cases, yet 10,500 of the 12,300 estimated exposures were of children under the age of 5, according to AAPCC. In 2017 alone there have been 167 reports of adults older than the age of 60 being exposed to these pods. As well as a video being posted by College Humor of a man who ate an entire bowl of laundry pods, that resulted in him being carted off into an ambulance.

“I don’t regret it,” he said.

These pods could pose a risk to elderly adults who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. According to tide.com, these pods have multiple harmful ingredients such as, alcohol ethoxylates, sodium and calcium formate, di-propylene glycerol, and benzisothiazolinone. Teenagers are eating these pods for the soul purpose of fame and bragging rights.

Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge-

The Kylie Jenner lip challenge became a huge trend back in 2015 and slid its way into 2018 in a blink of an eye. Teenagers have been artificially plumping their lips with just a shot glass to get that Kylie Jenner lip look. By doing this trend there are multiple risks that can occur. If you use a shot glass it could break due to the glass not being flexible, leaving you with one bloody lip. According to  Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon this challenge can cause significant pain, swelling, and bruising; but there’s also a potential risk for scarring and permanent dis-figuration with repeated attempts.

Birdbox Challenge-

As the new 2018 Netflix Original Birdbox made its way across all social media platforms, so did the next challenge. The movie Birdbox is essentially a movie based around the characters doing everything blindfolded or they would die. Fans of the movie took note of the blindfolds and decided to see what it would be like to wear a blindfold on a daily basis. In the movie the characters are just doing simple everyday tasks. What’s been soaring around the internet is people doing things like going into a mall and going shopping. Others took it to the next level. According to StudyBreak, a 17-year-old Utah resident caused a highway collision while driving with her beanie pulled over her eyes, imitating the blindfold from the movie. Netflix even made a post on their main Twitter account saying, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but; PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRDBOX CHALLENGE. Slowly after that being posted YouTube said enough was enough and took down the dangerous videos that were swarming the web.
