Unequal pay has been a problem for years. Women and people of color have faced discrimination in the workforce. Although many think the problem is solved, a huge amount of people all over the world are still facing the inequality of not being paid the same amount as other races or genders.
In order to recognize unequal pay, it’s important to know what it is.
“[Unequal pay, in my opinion, is] the pay wage difference between men and women,” junior Jaeden Mittenthal said. “Which is actually that women are paid 80 percent of what men are making, although this is varying from state to state. Even though society tells us that education through college should describe the gap, it doesn’t.”
An important factor to consider when it comes to unequal pay is who it affects.
“Unequal pay mainly affects many people across the spectrum, not just women, but as well as people of color,” Mittenthal said. “Again, Americans make the highest median income, then white Americans, Latinos, and African Americans, and then Native Americans. To say unequal pay doesn’t affect us all is lying. Although many factors [of how much a person makes] are in this statistic such as the area you are working for or the people you are working for.”
It’s important to be conscious of the issue.
“Equal pay is important because some people make more than others when they do the exact same job as one another at the same company,” junior Carl Owens said. “This to me is unfair and important to be aware of.”
There are some controversies as to where some people don’t believe that it’s real or not.
“Unequal pay is a problem still those who say it isn’t, it is happening to every woman and child today,” said Mittenthal. “It’s probably affected everyone you know, the teachers in the hallways, the people you see in the street, or walking by.”
The question of how much you make may be an uncomfortable question for some because of the pay gap.
“I feel that asking someone their amount of money they make is a personal question unless you are close family or friend,” Owens said. “I would just refrain from asking that question and instead ask maybe the salary range or something like that.”
It’s been years and there still isn’t a solution to this problem.
“I think the issues of unequal pay can be solved by making more people aware of the issue,” said Mittenthal. “Then start targeting companies that do that.”
Many believe that the problem starts with fixing the Equal Pay Laws.
“I believe that this issue starts with easing the pay gap and strengthening Equal pay laws,” Owens said. “Companies should look past your gender and race and base the amount you make on exactly what you do and what position of the career you’re in. Pay what is appropriate for the position.
Discrimination in the workplace is an issue that some people choose to ignore but needs to be less normalized.
“Full discrimination can not be stopped but we can lower it by making people have more options to defend themselves if this time should come,” Mittenthal said. “We start by asking ourselves, how can we defend ourselves if this should happen to us? If unequal pay is happening to our generation or to other generations. Because some people even though they riot, they start unions and start boycotting sometimes. It isn’t going to change unless we get proper authorities called but even then you have a chance of the problem not being solved. We live in a government that tries to be equal in every means but there is a human element within the government that has greed and is willing to turn a blind eye to what is right and wrong for people in positions of power. Discrimination in the workplace happens and it cannot be ignored.”
